current mood: :-)

a general art update (i send this to the people on my art mailing list). :)

This is just a quick update to let you know that 6 new items have been added to my etsy shop (see images below). The paintings are currently listed as prints, but some of the originals are still for sale, so if you'd like an actual Tam original (hem hem ;)) do enquire and I'll let you know if the original is still for sale! :-)

Additionally, I wanted to let you know that I'm available for more commissions! I've had quite a few commission request recently to paint paintings for people based on their pictures of friends or family; note; I don't tend to do realistic portraits but I'd paint the image in my own "whimsical" style using as many characteristics of the person in the image. [ie: you're gonna get a whimsical girl/ boy with characteristics of the individual in question]. They are wonderful gifts for birthdays or Christmas! [or so I'm told!]

If you are interested in ordering a commission you can either use the 'alchemy - request custom item' feature on etsy (www.willowing.etsy.com) or just email me (tam [at] willowing [dot] org) with your requests/ ideas and I'll let you know about prices.

if every day could be like this
by Erzebet YellowBoy ([info]erzebet)
at July 25th, 2008 (02:24 pm)

On a day like today, this is an island paradise. I had lunch on the patio and afterwards, a siesta in the sun. Yesterday I rekindled my love affair with the dremel; the skies were grey so I stayed in and worked on two new pieces of art all day long. Today I've been working on [info]jlundberg's book, cutting and binding one tiny interior as a test to see how this new paper handles. The last time I worked on Jason's book, the silk paper did me in. It's been reprinted on velvet paper, which is ever so much easier to work with as far as cutting and binding goes.

I've also started coding the next issue of CdF, but I've not been back into the slushbox yet. It is a balancing act. If all goes well, we'll have more content than we usually do, and I don't want to see a single typo or bit of html where it shouldn't be when that thing goes live. I'll read more subs next week and make decisions on those still there.

We're off to the pub tonight, I think, and tomorrow is for a stroll around Wakefield and then an evening of tucking in and watching films. Any recommendations? Do any Brits who read this use this service? As far as I know there is no Netflix here, so we're thinking of joining that one.

This has, without a doubt, been the best week I've had since coming home. Next week should be even better.

For [info]jenlibrarian's birthday bouquet
by Jackie Dolamore ([info]fabulousfrock)
at July 25th, 2008 (01:42 am)

My favorite flowers are the ones my Dad sent me for my birthday one year. I think it was my 16th? Well, the year doesn't matter, but what was so sweet is that I still lived at home so he could have just brought me flowers. Even that would have been a surprise because no one ever gives me flowers. But, no, he actually had flowers delivered TO me. I am generally afraid of strangers at the door so I actually kinda freaked out when someone was at the door saying they had a flower delivery for me.

But then when I opened the card and saw they were from my Dad for my birthday... Well, it was just one of dearest things ever!

I am not usually a big flower person (yes, it's true, I'm such a foodie I'm usually just like, hey, grow a pepper instead! Redder than a rose and tasty too!) but a well-chosen gift of flowers is something to remember forever.

there was a time when I could get home from work full of gumption, ready to ... work more.

Those days seem to be gone. I'm outta steam. I am burned right out. Even beer and chocolate doesn't do the trick.

I feel like a slacker, when the reality is I'm an overachiever with a crippling workload, and I'm completely over my living situation.

I need a *decent* vacation. I need a walk in the woods. I need to tie this ball of stress up and shoot it into the sun and completely demolish every atom of it.

I also need a really nice massage.

All Fall Down & Pointless Remakes

current mood: amused

I was just watching the stage version of Sweeney Todd on Youtube, and found this trailer (the connection is that Angela Lansbury is in both):

I couldn't help think how tacky and dated the trailer was, but also loved its "everything must be explained" attitude to the audience.

On other news, I heard that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is going to be remade with new music. There's been rumours about this for a few years, but maybe this time it's true! I think the fans and the public would be heavily divided over such a production. Would it revive midnight viewings? Who knows.

However, one curious exercise is to cast people in the roles. Here's who I'd pick for a remake (speaking roles only):

Dr. Frank-N-Furter: Jim Carey / Marylin Manson / Andy Hallett
Janet Weiss: Kylie Minogue / Alyson Hannigan
Brad Majors: Jim Carey / Nicholas Brendon
Riff Raff: Johnny Depp / Jim Carey / James Marsters
Magenta: Gwen Stefani / Pink / Madonna
Columbia: Eliza Dushku / Helena Bonham Carter
Dr. Everett Von Scott:  Anthony Head / Patrick Stewart / John Lithgow
Rocky Horror: Adam Baldwin / Mark Lutz / Owen Wilson
Eddie: Jack Black / Guy Pearce / Ron Perlman
The Criminologist: Patrick Stewart / Stephen Fry
Ralph Hapschatt: Will Ferrell
Betty Munroe Hapschatt: Mercedes McNab

Some explanation may be in order. There's a number actors from the Buffy/Angel TV series listed. This is because I've seen (most of them) sing and dance. Likewise Depp and Bonham Carter. The hardest role to cast isn't that of Frank-N-Furter, but of Columbia. Frank-N-Furter probably needs to be underplayed, whereas Brad is hammed up.

Who would you cast (if anyone at all, ?

Making the Transition to Veganism
by Fatfree Vegan Kitchen ([info]fatfreevegan)
at July 24th, 2008 (08:00 pm)

Oprah's 21-Day Challenge Support PageI get a lot of email from people who have questions about veganism, and one of the most common things they ask is how they can make the transition from an omnivorous diet to a vegan one. I do my best to answer but, to be honest, it's been a long time since I became vegan and even longer since I became vegetarian, and my memory is just not that good. I remember intending to transition slowly into vegetarianism but then becoming inspired and just throwing away all of the meat in my kitchen. I had one vegetarian cookbook and no internet, so it's amazing to me now that I managed to keep my resolve to stop eating meat. The details of how I did that are lost somewhere in the haze of the last 20 years, so I'm not much help to those of you who need specifics.

But I've just discovered that Erik Marcus, author of Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating, has a series of short audio podcasts that do a great job of explaining how to make the transition to veganism "as easily, healthfully, and gracefully as possible." Aimed at people following Oprah's 21-Day Vegan Cleanse, the 21 podcasts provide information about getting adequate nutrition, setting up your kitchen, and avoiding animal ingredients, as well as offer plenty of answers to the common question, "What do I eat?" As Erik says, it's not about discipline and cutting things out: "Rather than cut out foods, crowd them out. Your main job will be to try as many vegan foods as possible....The more foods you try, the more sensational options you'll discover."

Though Oprah's cleanse is over, I know that there are a lot of people reading this blog who are in the transitional stages of becoming vegetarian or vegan, and I think you'll get a lot out of this podcast series. Each podcast is about 8 to 12 minutes long, the perfect length to listen to as you check your email in the morning.

The Veg Blog Search Engine

Veg Blog Search WidgetI wanted to let you all know that I've finally succeeded in putting my Vegetarian Blog Search Engine on its own web page: vegblogsearch.com. This is the same search engine I've linked to for years on my Blogs I Like page, but now it's on its own, easy-to-find domain. Putting it together has been a labor of love for me because I think vegetarian blogs are a valuable source of recipes and information, and finding that information should be as easy as possible. I added each of the over 400 blogs by hand, carefully checking that they are really vegetarian or vegan, and still I continue to find new vegetarian blogs every day. (If you search for your blog's title and it doesn't appear, email me and I'll add you.)

The site is in its beta stage right now, with "placeholder" graphics until I can find a graphic artist who will really give it some personality. I've made the little widget above available to anyone who would like to use it. Click on the graphic to go to the page where you can copy the code; then open your blog's template and paste the code where you'd like it to appear on your blog. Your readers can then use the search engine directly from your blog. I hope you find it as big a help as I do!

New Marie Antoinette ORIGINAL Painting, Last Leaves Drawing, etc....
by Jasmine Becket-Griffith ([info]jasminetoad)
at July 24th, 2008 (08:33 pm)

Hi everyone!

I have an AWESOME big new painting tonight up for auction (Marie Antoinette!), as well as a new original DRAWING (oswoa sized - the Last Leaves). Very cool stuff!

First off is "Marie Masquerade" - a glorious painting - all READY TO HANG - no framing needed. She's likely inspired by my recent artist retreat to France - Marie Antoinette - the doomed queen, dressed with her over-the-top glory - sailing ship hair adornment - magnificent hairstyle, lush makeup and her not-very-concealing masquerade mask! I love this painting, it really looks awesome in person. It is an original acrylic painting on GALLERY STYLE CRADLED MASONITE - Matt has added a hanger on the back, so it is READY TO HANG! No frame needed! Basically it's like masonite, but with deep wooden sides, known as "gallery style." Of course you can always add a frame if you want (gallery profile), but she looks awesome by herself too. I've painted the wooden sides a glossy black, so it looks pretty sharp. This really is a lovely painting - and she is up on eBay starting at just ONE PENNY with no reserve for a 7-Day auction ending the evening of Thursday, July 31st at 7:23PM Central Time. You can see her below, click on the sneak preview to see the details:

Click HERE to see my "Marie Masquerade" 16x20 ORIGINAL PAINTING

Next up - due to popular demand - another lovely original drawing in the OSWOA™ size (4"x6"). This is an ORIGINAL DRAWING, not a print of any kind. It is pencil & charcoals on toned cardstock, is 4"x6" and is absolutely beautiful. When I was in France I spent a good deal of time drawing, and realized how much I enjoy it. So here we have a "The Last Leaves Drawing" - up on eBay for a 7-Day auction ending the evening of Thursday, July 31st at 7:00PM Central Time. Click on the thumbnail image below to see the entire drawing:

Enjoy! I've got to go, a TON of orders & other stuff to get through, Matt & I will be up all night!

Spirit Jugs
Spirit Jugs

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Clean plastic gallon milk jugs
Black permanent marker
Craft knife
String of 50 clear low-wattage holiday lights

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

1. Draw ghost eyes and mouths on the jugs. Tip: Leave the caps on while you do this, so the jugs don't dent.

2. Use the craft knife to cut a half-dollar-size hole in the back of each jug (a parent's job).

3. Arrange the ghosts near each other and string the lights between them, stuffing several bulbs into each of the jugs.

These are a great idea for those that are on a budget this fall season, or if you jsut enjoy being crafty. There is a lot more to be seen here. enjoy!
